All he would need is a transmission and the IndyCar Buick V6 turbo it was built to accommodate, and he would be all set.

All the track mods on this chassis aside, how is it better than starting with a Cayman/Boxster with a blown motor?

A GT3 engine in a Cayman sounds like a much better idea.

Don't know what a Mezger 3.8 or 4.0 engine costs from one of the Porsche engine builders, but a now defunct race shop was offering Carrera S motors for the Cayman S upgraded to ~390hp for about $40k. Mezger / GT1 motors may require a lot of fabrication to mate properly into a Cayman S, but with enough money you can do anything.

With Porsche rolling out new engines in the next generation GT3s, might be easier to perform an engine swap in the next Cayman.

My question is how would you get the transmission to work properly in this car?

It's designed to be oriented in a certain direction, so if you turn it around for a midengine application, wouldn't it have, say, six reverse speeds (what was first through sixth gears) and one forward speed (what was reverse)?

If ever the phrase "buying somebody else's problems" was true, it's probably with this car.

But I admit, this engine midmounted in a 911 would definetly be something to show the boys at the Porsche Clubs:

More like "buy somebody's else's project that they ran out of money to finish."
