    'Hellcat.'

My guess is that if you're Dodge, you put together a long list of names for the guys in legal affairs, and then they come back and tell you that all of them have been taken, and you try some more, and finally you end up at... 'Hellcat.'

A cat who lives in hell? A cat who scurried through an open door and escaped from hell? Or maybe hell is just full of cats?

Regarding car names, did you know that one of the names originally considered for the Pontiac Firebird was "Banshee"? That name was shelved after someone pointed out that a banshee is a "bird from hell".

It is actually named after the legendary F6F "Hellcat" WWII fighter airplane that played a big role in defeating the japaneese fleet in the Pacific. The Helcat had a monstrous radial engine that was also used to power a combat tank, dont remember the exact model. It was producing more than 2000 hp in it's final verisons.I have no idea what might be the connection between Dodge,Grumman or Pratt&Whitney, but cheap tricks with creating non-existing connection to a legendary symbol does not seem inappropriate nowadays

Maybe it was borrowed from the Buick Hellcat, also of WW2 fame:

The highest-horsepower factory American muscle car ever ... inspired by a tank. How fitting.

Well... looks like it CAN make it around a track.
    And survive in one piece.

Just barely. You can just feel how heavy that thing is, as the driver coasts through the corners . . .
