Default CoTA causes mass confusion for track events and HPDEs

This ought to enrage some people:

Austin's Circuit Of The Americas Cancels Track Days, Screws Over Racing Fans Everywhere (Updated)

Not sure if its 100% true, but if it is, it's terrible news for many.

As of this morning the SCCA event is not impacted by this. But it will be interesting to see what it's all about...

Ok, yeah i guess not all events are effected, but the majority are. CoTA released a statement in regards to this, just too long for me to absorb right now.

The picture at the top of jalopniks page is pretty cool. I didn't realize how much elevation change was at COTA. Ironically, now I want to go there more than ever.

They told the track day people they are "going in another direction". This was after they cashed their checks.

The management has been screwing things up ever since they pushed out the founder.

Breach of contract, pure and simple. The club racing and track day organizers that had contracts and/or checks cashed by CoTA should sue not only for the contract price, but for consequential damages such as lost profits, harm to business reputation, etc. etc.

Depends on the contract. I was under the impession that most track rental agreements allowed either side to bail out of it.

Then what is the point of that contract? lol. It's like saying, I agree too uphold the terms and conditions, but not really. Useless contract if that is the case.

You still need a contract. Contracts are simply an agreement on paper. It's not a death pact. Usually the penalty (if any) for not holding up your end in various ways is spelled out in the agreement.

Regardless of how the contract is written, someone that cancels a contract after cashing checks is up to no good.

It looks like they changed their minds?

Circuit of The Americas™ today announced that it would honor track rentals with four organizations that had booked track days and paid rental fees in advance. “We are moving ahead with these agreements and contacting clients so they can share this information with their members and customers,” Circuit spokesperson Julie Loignon said. “The executed rental agreements will limit the number of vehicles we have on track at any given time to ensure a fun and safe experience for participants, including any amateur drivers who will be participating. We regret the confusion that was caused as we worked through these issues with our clients and look forward to providing a one-of-a-kind experience to auto enthusiasts coming to Circuit of The Americas through our track rental program.”

^^^ Geez. Maybe the idiots who run CotA never heard of club racing and open track days. "We regret any confusion . . ."? The confusion that they caused.

Their choice is to let the track remain empty for 45+ weekends a year and only host big time professional races, or they can have revenue from club racing and open track events every single weekend of the year (besides the weekends taken up with pro races) and some weekdays too. Their choice . . .

My guess would be that this isn't about the track administration changing their minds so much as it is about the track running out of money and not having the means to keep staff in place on a day-to-day basis. It's hard to actually make money when you're in business with Ecclestone and his people. I wonder if they're prepping for insolvency.

Hope I'm wrong, of course. But it just doesn't make much sense any other way I think about it.

I was in Atlanta over the weekend when I heard about this. I spoke to some people from the Austin area who also happen to be racers. They predict some fairly significant fallout from the local gov't about this.

Personally, it sounds like more F1 geopolitical BS.

On a side note, I visited Atlanta Motorsport Park...VERY nice! the elevation changes are very dramatic! Even the karting track has some drastic elevation changes that are unusual.
