    Default Corvette advice

My wife is looking to replace her Nissan 350z Roadster with a Corvette ragtop. It is her daily driver.

Looks like low mileage C5's are available for the low to mid $20k's and C6's about $10K more. Richard will be thrilled to hear that she will only consider a 6-speed.

Is the C6 worth the extra money?

Is the Z51 package something to hold out for? (stiff ride is fine)

We have only driven Z06 models before, but they are not available in soft top. Will the base model feel like a dog in comparison?

    Thanks for any advice

Personally, I think she would be happier with a C6 Z51 ragtop over the C5 LS1.

I have a c5z racecar. As technology advances you wish you bought up market because in a few more years that C5 will look like a C3 in dated looks and technology. So I think the hot animal in a vert is the C6 427 vert. That is an upgrade.

    I'd go with a Honda S2000 AP2 . . .

If she hasn't driven one, she really should at least test drive one before making the decision to go with a Vette vert. If you are in SoCal, she can drive mine.

The deposed former Sheriff of trackHQ . . .

    2006 Porsche 997 Carerra Coupe 6-MT - daily driver
1992 Honda (Acura) NSX 5-MT - classic investment I couldn't resist and occasionally drive
    2004 Honda S2000 AP2 6-MT - track day car
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR 6-MT - when I need a backseat, 4-doors, or a real trunk, and still want to haul ass . . .

The Corvettes for the most part look very similar externally with in model generations, with the exception of the C5 Z06 looking a bit different than the other C5s. Different model years have slightly different trim is all.

So it really comes down to the performance package you prefer. The base models still go well, but for best performance go with the Z51 package that has better suspension and I think on the C6 generation the GS models have bigger brakes and tires, but probably not available in convertible.

You just have to decide if that extra performance is important or not.

Have her sit in each and look at each in person. That should do it. No big difference between the c5 and c6 other than looks and interior and another 50-80hp.

Although the C6 was tempting in some ways, we ended up buying a 2002 torch red, 6-speed convertible with 40,000 miles on it this weekend.

First impression is that it seems like a lot of car for under $20K. Chrome wheels, heads up display, magnetic ride, Bose stereo.......

The morning after the purchase my wife opened the garage door and said "awesome, it wasn't a dream"

    Very funny!
