    Default Coronado Speed Festival

I wanted to let you all know that the vintage races at the Navy base in Coronado are coming up again Sept. 19-20. (Sorry Alpha Club)

The event has been run by the HSR group for many years, but SVRA is in charge as of this year. Looks like they will be bringing some fresh ideas and perhaps drawing some new entrants that haven't participated before.

Tickets are available on-line for a discount, and retired military can get 50% off through the base.

IMHO it is the best car event of the year in San Diego. Huge car show, and lots of vendors as well.

I will be driving the #7 Datsun 510 (white). Look for me near the back of the pack LOL

Stop by the pits and say hi.

    Good luck, Steve. Enjoy it.

Races like this make me want to own a vintage race car, too.

I think the cars built in 89, of which there are quite a few, have been eligible for a year or two now. The thing is there were no real classes for Miatas back them except SSB and a few of the Millen prepped cars in Escort Challenge (World Challenge). I think any NA6 entered in a VARA event would have to be prepped more or less to one of those specs. The WC cars were nothing special. Probably 145whp, gutted, caged running 205/50/15 Goodyear Eagle ZR's. I worked at Millen back then so I recall the cars. They had medium cams, bit more compression, a header and a special ECU from Mazda. Still had the AFM. They were slow.

Just the same, I have given thought to building one, just to be a (low budget) part of the VARA scene for a while.

I'm not sure I could play there. I heard they are real strict 13/13 club. Coming from non-contact SCCA, rubbing is racing. Every weekend someone's car does not go home in the same shape it arrived at the track.

The VARA scene is what it is. I wouldn't go in with a "race" mindset. More like polite SV red group HPDE with a checkered flag. I think atmosphere would be cool though and just I do now, I'd have the cheapest car there and the most expensive beer.

I'll be there- the brother-in-law will be racing a 914-6. He's the youngest guy there, I think.

Man, I want a 510 race car. They're good-looking and Troy Ermish was lapping ACS as fast as the BIL's 914-6.

    Very enjoyable event!
Bummed SVRA did not invite back the 80s IMSA GTO cars this year.
Just as well my motor needed a refresh this summer, so I'll be a spectator this year.

It was fun starting from the back last year. (due to a suspension failure in the Saturday race)
A first lap turn one shamazzle allowed me to pass 10 cars or so on the first lap.

Check out this Sunday afternoon postcard shot of downtown San Diego and the front straight grandstands.

Should we consider a top 20 list for the Coronado track?

About 2 hours after the "absolutely no contact" instructions at the drivers meeting last year, a big buck Porsche drove right over and on top of another car in the last turn.

I see as much damage from car contact at vintage races as I do LeMons races I participate in.

you are correct Troy really does get up on the wheel in the 510 as long as it does not break.

BTW if you are looking for a vintage 2002 race car I have on for sale.

    perfect I'll take it.
What size ventures do you run? 37?
    Are those 45 side drafts?
I was at AAA speedway recently and the side drafts looked huge on the 510 cars.
What rpm do you shift it at?

Had dual 48ida's on a few VW bugs back in the day.

That's a fast bug! I had a 2176 cc VW turbo sand car that had a Holley 750 cfm carb on it. Crappy down low, but would pin you to your seat once the boost came in!

Yes, 45's with 37's. The big dogs are running 48's and in some cases even 50's on these motors. This is a pretty mild pump gas motor with a 7,200 rpm chip in it.

I raced my Spec Miata a couple of times with VARA. As there isn't a true "home" for SMs in vintage racing, they put me in the "Club Racer" catch-all class for non-vintage race cars that just want to play. I had fun, they're a great group of people, and there's a very good chance you'll make it home without body damage, which is kind of nice. On the other hand, the Club Racer class can have some very fast cars in it (e.g., BMW M3), so an SM tends not to be competitive. But it's a good catch-all class if you just want to have fun and play.

And anybody who says that vintage racing isn't hard racing has never seen the B-Sedan and C-Sedan guys race. Those BMW 2002s and Datsun 510s race hard and put on a good show. And then tend to do it without taking each other out. :-)
