    Default Coronado re-cap

We had an awesome weekend at the Coronado Speedfest.

This is so much more than just a car race, and for the first time ever my wife and I participated in virtually everything we could.

Load-in is on Thursday at noon, with every driver getting a 30' X 35' paddock area. Even though we only live 40 minutes away, we rented a small RV to stay in, which worked out great. The full moon on Friday night was spectacular!

Thursday late afternoon they do a police escorted parade down the main street of Coronado. It felt so strange to be driving a race car through red lights on city streets. All intersections were blocked off, so the pace was brisk enough to keep from overheating. Near the middle of town they blocked off an area where we all parked and the local residents with their kids came out to check out the cars. There were at least 3-400 visitors. Kids were issued free hats and drivers Sharpee's to sign them.

Friday morning you can give military people a ride in your car on the track. I bolted a passenger seat in mine and took 5-6 people out for 3-4 hot laps. It's funny how you can tell people are grinning ear to ear with a helmet and head sock on!

Friday afternoon is a 20 minute test session, Friday evening is a drivers (and guest) full dinner/drinks in the Admirals backyard.

Two-20 minute flagged races on both Saturday and Sunday.

In between race sessions there is a car show with 3-400 cars to look at, vendor booths, kids rides, military pit crew challenge, ship tours, planes, tanks, helo's to check out.

    What a blast!

I have been slowly improving my 510, and everything finally clicked this weekend. First time ever top 10 finish for me, running in 6th at one point in a 31 car field. Not the front yet, but a PB for me!

This was the 19th year. Sure hope to be there for number 20!

    PS

I was able to take my wife on a ride-along as well, and she said it was "the most fun she had ever had in a car".

My friend said that this means our first date must have been a failure LOL

That sounds like a lot of fun. Racing in front of people is more fun than racing in an empty stadium. I wouldn't have believed it till I experienced a small sample of what that was like when we raced at the Miatas at MRLS event. We came off track and everyone was clapping. Pretty cool.

4 year old Optima, would only charge to 11.7 volts.
Not enough to run the MSD, fans, blowers, oil and fuel pumps and cool shirt.
Borrowed a battery felt like a new car again.

So, it didn't break. It just did what batteries do: die.

I think they can physically break inside. It's one of the reasons for a AGM battery.

My wife was on pit headset, so I said "I spun".

She hates it when I don't come back around after going out of her sight.

It wasn't as big of a deal until my life insurance ran out last year. LOL

I will give you $1,000 for it since it has a "broken" battery!

I was out there also. My little 2.5L Porsche 911ST was thrown in with the big boys. I had the smallest motor out there. I had a blast. Managed a Pole with a 1:12 and a tiny 2.5L. Watch the start..... I need more squirrels..... Last lap was the best. I broke on Sunday am- Maybe a rocker- Time to twin plug it.

Loose Caboose, Gian, ETK and 1 others like this.
    Thanks,

    Nice drive Chad!
Interesting to see the different cars and drivers and how different we all drive.
Jay in his video has a very relaxed grip and makes huge corrections with one hand.
Part of it might be the production car and the bias ply tires that like to slide.
Also the production car steering boxes with the slower steering ratios seems to require larger corrections and faster hands.
The rack on my race car is full lock at only 1/2 a turn.

That guy looks like he's on a Sunday drive. Resting his elbow with 2 fingers on the wheel. Seem like he should be smoking a cig too...lol That's a lot of car to be driving so casual.
