    Default Car Movies

Thumbing through channels tonight I came across Talledaga Nights. The first time I saw this movie I thought it sucked. Now after seeing it about 10 times (maybe more) I thik it is hysterical. So many one liners... I was wondering what everyone elses opinion is on 'go to' car related movies. They don't have to be racing oriented but it helps . Le Mans with Steve McQueen is a no brainer. The Quick and the Dead (F1, available under a couple of different names) is another incredible movie. Any others?

Bullitt with Steve McQueen. Yeah, it's a action/crime flick but it has a great car chase and features a Mustang. Plus, it's driven around San Francisco.

Talladege nights. Love it. Also, for entirely different reasons, Senna. And again for entirely different reasons, the original fast and the furious. Yep, I said that.

Recently, I was pleasantly surprised by Rush. I really expected Hollywood to ruin it, but they failed at that.

Pixar's Cars. Drive. Gone in 60 Seconds (dumb, but fun). Ronin (not a car movie, but close enough). Death Proof. Smokey and the Bandit.

Grand Prix, a 1966 film about F1, has some surprisingly good racing scenes.

"Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry". Circa 1974. An oldie but a goodie, especially if you're into the old Mopar muscle cars.

My favorite line is at the 4:19 mark when the cop says, "Keep going partner, 'cause my top end is unnn-limited!" Classic.

Talledega Nights, for sure. I was at the track that night when they were setting up to do the "invisible fire scene". Turn 3 at Lowes in Charlotte. Happened to be in a suite with a friend who had tickets, its location was before the start/finish line right after T4 . We were hanging around talking with other guests long after the event was over and the camera crews were staging the scene. We left at 11-12 and they hadn't filmed anything yet. We didn't really even know what was going out there until some of the track staff told us it was a Will Ferrell movie.

Other car movies, "Ronin", just for the car chases. "The Blues Brothers" on that same note.

While not a 'car movie' pre se, I love "The Fastest Indian".

Well I was going to say Smokey and the Bandit and Gumball Rally which were big hits back in the day. How about a couple horror movies with cars: The Car and Christine. Oh and American Graffiti.

I think it's "World's Fastest Indian," a movie I've always wanted to see, but never have. Lots of good ones already mentioned, but "Ronin" and "Bullitt" for the car chases.

Pixar's "Cars" and "Rush" for the stories. "Smokey and the Bandit," strictly for Jackie Gleason's performance.

"Vanishing Point," was another 1970s icon.

"Grand Prix" broke new ground in film production and camera placement. The opening five minutes showcased outstanding footage of drivers heel-toe-ing formula cars around Monaco, and James Garner really was driving.

For Grand Prix I'd probably skip all the non-racing content. It's pretty crap. Makes Le Mans look good.

Have to agree that Grand Prix doesn't have the greatest story... but the racing footage is simply awesome.

It's well worth watching the director's cut with Frankenheimer's narrative if you can.

It does meander a bit. Full disclosure: I've never made it through the whole thing, but then again it's always been late at night.

If nothing happens and there is no one around why did it not happen?
