Default Can we have a Daytona 24 Hours 101

Since we have 2 Trackhq'ers in this year's Daytona 24 hours (and many future Trackhq'ers). Can an expert chime in on basics of Daytona 24 pls.

Some insight , who is favored to win ? What cars are eligible ? How much fuel goes in the car ? What kind of qualifying lap time do we expect ? Any spec parts that must be ran ? And so on...

    Thanks.

I think it would be interesting to include GS and ST in the 24 Hour but that might make for too much carnage.

William did so well in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill last year that he plans to run his Miata in the 24 Hours of Daytona. He's just trying to figure out how well he can do if he installs a LS-9 conversion . . .

    I'm a newb, but here's my 2cents:

Favorites: I expect any of the cars in the top teams to be competitive at the end, but I expect the smaller teams to fall out by the end. I could be wrong, but it just seems like so much of the race is prep and the larger more experienced teams have a clear advantage over the complete distance.

Qualifying: The sessions are only 15 minutes long. For GT that means 40+ cars going out at the same time and getting *maybe* 5 laps. If it's anything like the test days, someone is going to crash or cause a full course yellow on the first hot lap... if any of the fast guys get a clean lap I'm expecting low 1:48's, maybe 1:47's based on the way some of the cars were sandbagging at the tests. :-)

I don't really have any other insight into the strategy or specific items allowed on the cars (except the Porsche's, which are basic Cup's with an open exhaust and RSR gear box allowed).

Can't wait for the weekend to start.. qualifying is on Thursday @ 4:15PM EST for GT. I think I'll be qualifying our car and expect to get pummeled by the Pro's.. but we might surprise a few of them. :-)

good luck to both of you. At least one of you should podium !!

Mike: so it seem you are in the top team - that won last year. of course, the team got 5 cars. pro thing is over-rated, we expect you to do well....... go kick some butt...

Billy: how fast is your car ? is it a top contender based on lap time ? obviously there are a lot more than lap time....... But just wondering if BMW is a real contender if competitors don't have issues.

from what I've read. most of the teams have figured out ways to make cars last. so it is basically a 24 hours sprint....

I do know that the Turner M3 is a tube frame car, unlike the Porsche.

Two chilean guys will be racing in your team's (TRG) sister car, #64.
Eliseo Salazar (ex-F1, he's a pro but hasn't accomplished much in a long time) and Eduardo Costabal (amateur).

Best of luck in the race, will be following closely!

Ya, I drove the #64 at the first test in December. Eliseo is one of the nicest racers I've ever met.. super nice guy.

edit: Billy is also one of the nicest. He helped me more at my first GA test than the other drivers on the team I went there with! :P

At the December test (my first time at Daytona) he was about .25 faster than me. At the Roar I was about 1 sec faster (2 sec faster than my best lap the first time), but we were in different cars. I think they were having more setup issues than we were having.

Both our cars were about 2 seconds off the Pro cars because we didn't have all the upgrades, but we will for the race.

Biggest different was basically the motor. We were down 40-50HP as the car I'm driving is the ALMS GTC car.. GTC rules are more strict on power output (factory stock from Porsche, including cats.. same as IMSA GT3 Challenge). Rolex rules allow some tweaks. For the race weekend we'll have a brand new full Rolex spec motor from Porsche. You spend so much time at Daytona at full-throttle, power is king...

If you've heard a normal Porsche GT3 Cup go by on the track, and and then get to hear a Rolex GT3 Cup go by... you'll understand. Lol! :-)

I know what you mean. The World Challenge Cups sound pretty wicked too compared to a standard Cup.
