Default Buggy Whips and Rabbit Ears

For those that even remember "rabbit ears", a prognostication regarding car sales - fairly long term (but time does fly):

I don't follow the Motor Authority writer's logic that people buying self-driving cars will lead to a "massive drop" in auto sales. Isn't buying an autonomous car still buying a car?

    As mentioned in the article...

What if your auto-car drives your spouse to work, then turns around, picks you up and takes you to work? 1 car needed.

Cost of cabbing it places drops as cabs no longer have cabbies. Less people buy cars.

    less crashed cars...

    and

who cars if it's old.. If your not "driving" do you care to get a new one? I already feel that way with the EV's, I just don't care about them, they are transportation appliance,,, How often do you get a new toaster?

That would quadruple the mileage and wear amd tear on the car. If everyone tried it, traffic congestion would likely make it not viable.

I also see another problem. What is to keep someone from stealing these things as they sit in traffic in a field of autonomous cars, with not a living soul in sight to witness?

there will be less traffic, not more. tail gating won't be an issue. car can follow each other much closer.

also a lot less accidents. so less traffic jam.

I would love these. it can take my kids to school, soccer practice, dental appointment, etc......

By the time this is out, it will be your kid's kids getting a ride to soccer practice.

they will also sell more cars, not less. Though I believe total revenue will drop.

    1. I will get one for each of my kid too. it is like their personal chauffeur. take them everywhere.
    2. car will be cheaper. if speed limit is only 70mph, why do you need a car with more than 50whp ? so 2 cylinder engine will be norm, with smaller tire, smaller radiator, etc...
    3. EV will sell a ton more. range is less of an issue, if the car can drive itself to a charger station while waiting.
    4. cars will be less of a status symbol. who cares if your kids rides in a Hyundai or a Mercedes ? Even a Mercedes won't cost much more, see #2.

I'm not so sure that people will run their cars longer and not want upgrades. I think it will still be something of a status symbol for a while, and people wanting smarter, smoother, better riding car.

I suspect that age hurts modern cars more than miles.

sure people that think a car gives them status will always do that... but I think the majority of people changes there cars for reliability. and dread($$$) having to get a new one. if the car drives it's self you don't notice a funny feeling/noise/hiccup... it just keeps working until you get a text/email telling you it needs a replacement (part or whole)

    Another point...
2 people at my work no longer drive. They have a cars in the driveway, other people in the household drive... but they basically never drive... >90% of there transportation needs are filled by Uber. They get an Uber ride to and from work everyday.

Round trip for them ~75 bucks(mine would be less).. so 18k a year? certainly more expensive then the lease on an EV,,,

but these guys would be driving a $60-75k car... No drive stress, and zero car related time suck-age...100% fully scale-able usage... it's interesting...

    Programming will be interesting.

Situation: Either you have to (1) "take out" two jay walkers (a grandma with her grand daughter) or (2) drive into oncoming traffic at very high speed.

    What does omni car do?
