    WTF?

    BMW 1 series is FWD.
2 Series is basically inbetween the old 1 and 3 series.
3 Series is ONLY 4-door cars.
4 Series is ONLY 2-door cars.

^Thus there is no longer a true "M3"...?

It gets worse. Don't forget about the 6 Series Grand Coupe which is a 4 door version of the 2 door version of the 6 Series, the 3 series GT which is a taller version of the 3 Series wagon but slightly shorter than the X3, and the X1 which is smaller than the X3, and the 5 Series GT which is smaller than the X5 but taller than the 5 Series Wagon . There is also going to be M variants of all of these. M2, M3 sedan, M4, M5, M6, M6 Grand Coupe, etc. etc. etc . It looks like the marketing department has BMW by the balls. What happened to you BMW?!

As I have said before, BMWs have gotten heavier, softer, and more laden with useless luxury doo-dads with every succeeding generation. They don't make a car that resembles the '95 E36 M3 was my daily driver for 8 years. The Ultimate Driving Machine? I don't think so. The Ultimate I spent a lot of money but can't afford a 911 and I want to impress girls and my friends? Yeah, that's BMW today . . .

1992 Honda (Acura) NSX 5-MT - classic investment I couldn't resist and occasionally drive
    2004 Honda S2000 AP2 6-MT - track day car
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR 6-MT - when I need a backseat, 4-doors, or a real trunk, and still want to haul ass . . .

OTOH looks like the marketing department got it right for the business, but not for us the enthussiasts.BMW is outselling all other luxury brands here in the US,but the identity is washing away.If they still manufacture E30 or E36 M3 they wouldnt be on the market today.

They need to streamline their ****. Too much cluster**** going on with their line of cars. KISS. Just do 1, 3, 5, 7 Series + M editions + X5. Done! Diluting their own brand.

    Diluting their own brand.

The company does seem to be adding a lot models without adding much to the brand.

The E92 M3 is an awesome car. While 500lbs heavier, stock for stock the e92 is less 'floppy' than the E36 M3. And the new TT V8 M5 is pretty badass.

Welcome to the auto biz! Marketing spewing garbage, skewing numbers to sell ideas, accounting throwing up roadblocks. Does a company that small need that many models? Probably not.

How about making a good, reliable, simple affordable one? Not talking about Minis here either...

Mercedes openly states their strategy is to make a benz for every possible niche buyer. Thus eleventy billion models. It's working so BMW is doing it too. When you make so many niche products, none of them have to be amazing. The last BMW I felt any passion for was the E30 M3.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.
But obviously I just dont get it. -fatbillybob

And this seems to be a 4 cylinder, coupe placement positioned between the BRZ and the Boxster guys.

E- if you come across an e30m3 at a good price and intact, buy it. The value on those has steadily risen. I have kept an eye on them for about 15 years. You could buy an intact one in in the early '00s for around 10k. Now you would hard pressed to buy that same car for under $20k. I almost bought a shell, but passed on it because I didn't have the time for a slow build.

I loved my e36m3, but mainly the styling and motor. My new project e30 will be along the theme of Jack's 911.

I haven't really been a BMW fan for several years but I think this 2 Series looks good. I also like the renderings I'vs seen for the 2 Series Gran Coupe or whatever it's called.

I don't get why you guys are complaining about BMW giving choices. They are one of the few companies making cars available in the US that I wouldn't mind having as a daily. They're supposed to be bringing the 3 series wagon with a diesel to the US. Many of their cars are still available with a manual transmission in the US but that number is decreasing. The 2 Series Gran Coupe might be the cheapest 4 door rwd sedan available in the US when it arrives.

What I don't understand is how can BMW produce so many niche vehicles and still be profitable when most other companies are shrinking their choices at least for the US market.

I am no fan of BMW. they drive great, but it is becoming Fiat of this generation.
Due to their so called "free" maintenance program.

One day in 2001, every BMW built prior required 3k miles oil change, annual coolant change, annual brkad fluid change, bi-annual transmission fluid change, bi-annual diff fluid chane, and so forth. Then on one magic day in 2001, BMW factory had a eureka moment and discovered 15k oil, lifetime coolant, transmission and diff fluid. This enabling free maintenance.

My wife leased a BMW for 2 years, 30 miles in 2004. What did she gets in free maintenance ? Exactly ONE oil change. Everything else is lifetime anyway.

Since then. Every BMW is under maintained. Modern version of Fiat or Alfa, great to drive, nightmare after warranty.

I had a track day a few months back to shake down a few bits of gear on my mx5. Happened to be an M drivers day. .

Needless to say I had a lot of fun eating them up in my (then) 72kw / about 100rwhp mean machine

+1 vote for the e30 and 36 models, some very competitive examples racing here.

My sentiment exactly. I would love a 3 series wagon for DD and for business trips, but the maintenance scares the crap out of me. I considered it for my wife, who drives a bit within a 150 mile radius to visit her clients for telecom, but now I am leaning more towards a c320 for her. I hate the lines of the M-B wagons, but she likes them. Eh.
