Default The "Big" Question for Early Stage Tracksters

The "no new post" message just won't do, so I have a general question for everyone:

Understanding that there are no "right" answers - only preferences and opinions - what is your individual pick for the best $20k double duty car (track and daily driver) - mods included?

    Mods:
6ULR wheels wrapped in Hankook RS-3s
    Bump steer kit
    Oil cooler
    Tranny cooler
    Fixed back bucket seat
    6 point harness
    Roll-Bar
    coil-overs of any quality brand
Rear wing of any quality brand

This should bring you to just under $20,000. S2000's are fast. Very fast.

NB Miata (99-05 for those of you not in the know)
    Hardtop
Roll bar or half cage, as crazy as you want to get.
Xida S or CS coilovers from 949 racing
    Racing Beat front sway bar
    15 x 9 6ULs with 225 45 15 RS-3s
    bigger radiator
Carbotech XP 10/8 f/r brake pads
Better brake fluid like Motul or Super blue
    Braided stainless brake lines
Whatever kind of race seat you can deal with daily
    6 point harness
    light weight flywheel
lighter, better exhaust - header if 99/00
    Torsen or OS Giken LSD
    Mazda Comp engine mounts

That will get you started with some cash to spare. Plus if you do wreck it, you might still have money left to buy another tub. You might not be the fastest car on the track but if driven well you can hold you own while keeping the cost of consumables in check.

    1. Interesting take on the oil and tranny cooler. I was unware that these were important for S2K's.

    2. With no wing, would you change out the rear stablilzer bar to reduce oversteer?

    track and daily driver
A dual-duty car is bad at both duties.

SE30 and an open trailer and an old pickup, with $5k left over for safety gear and perhaps enough track time to get a race license.

Not exactly the question the OP asked. But a little good instruction goes a long way, and all that really matters seat time, seat time, seat time.

    1. I drive an MR-S (also a great double duty combo) not an S2000, so my knowledge is derived from what I've read. I do not know if an S2000 "needs" any coolers for any of its fluids, but I do know that heat kills. I'd install those parts for longevity reasons on any car.

    2. I would probably remove the rear sway bar completely.

Keep in mind that the faster you go, typically, the more it will cost.

Look up the prices of various tires in popular track car sizes. Look at how much brake rotors cost for various popular track cars. How much replacement engines and transmissions, fenders . . . cost. You might be fine if you have a low tax rate Republican's track budget, but if you had that, you wouldn't have asked the question.

I have an NA I'll sell you cheap. Only minor body work needed to bring it back to its former glory. I kid.

Everyone will always recommend what they own, but statistically, the popularity of tracking Miatas is undeniable, and I think it's due in large part to the competence of the car itself and the low cost of consumables and spares.

for a dual purpose car, nothing beats a S2000.

Miata is just too slow. you can be the best driver, and will still be rolling chicane in advanced group. it is the best car to start with though.

Corvette - great, except you can't buy one, (only track reliable is a c5z06), for under $20k and with budget left for tires.

race car is fun and all. but it costs a LOT more money to go racing, with less track time.

I have to disagree with this. Emilio was eating up S2ks and most other cars on the track in the Rental at SMMP a couple of years ago with my fat butt in the passenger seat. You can build a plenty fast dual purpose Miata under the budget mentioned. I'm not saying it's better than an S2K but it will be less expensive to run.

You are comparing a driver to car. Put Emilio in his S2K and he would have eaten up some Corvettes too. In fact, I use to make that part of my balanced diet at Willow Springs.
