There is no technical information about these cars. I think I saw these cars are supposed to be the same platform as the formula E cars but they need a whole load of extra sensors.
How will these cars know where the other cars are?
I want to see video of a car successfully dive bombing another car without crashing or drastically slowing down.
And what are the passing rules?

It would be like watching a slot car race with no hand control. What's the point?

Comparing programming and physical characteristics, e.g. chassis set up, aero etc.?

This would be a very interesting competition... for the engineers involved. Spectators? Not so much.

It would be interesting if it became popular. Instead of celebrating one driver, fans would celebrate entire teams, and engineers would have their names known far and wide. Or it would just be, "Go Purple/Green car!"

I disagree. I think if each team were forced to "train" their own driving algorithms then they would indeed develop specific characteristics and could become interesting.

The key will be forbidding inter-car communication. If the cars are forced to autonomously determine what the other cars are doing/going to do based solely on their on track behavior I think this will be fascinating.

How do you teach the algorithm to execute a 2 wheels off pass? What parameters does it obey? How do you teach counter-tactics (if Team A knows to execute a dive-bomb pass there must be X inches of room left off the apex, does Team B force their car to stay X-5 inches from apex?)

Ill bet the first few attempts at this end in piles at the end of a straight or zero passing whatsoever. After that, it should get good.

I for one welcome our new robot overlords.....

Have you ever tried a Group 12 wing body slot car, it's almost the same.
If nothing happens and there is no one around why did it not happen?

Well interesting like a video game. What this protected generation of video game kids don't get is "danger." When we played outside we fell off our bikes and broke our arms, we could loose an eye playing with the BB gun. We race because the adrenaline rush is there. The potential of getting hurt that's what makes our game interesting.

I dont think that is lost on anyone. I have always agreed with the ethos that the danger makes it interesting, but it is in the end selfish. Do I think automated racing will supplant human racing? Absolutely not. The first car race was born when the 2nd car was made. As long as 2 humans own similar objects they will pit them against each other. I do however think this is a fantastic venue to continue the development of autonomous systems, possibly even with public buy in and subsidy. Imagine every car modification that was banned because it was too dangerous. Back on the table. This can and will lead to developments in spur disciplines that died in the past due to a race series legislating it out of existence.

When does Skynet become self-aware? Before or after it dominates the 'ring?

If you no longer go for a gap that exists, then it's probably time to update your firmware.

    How about this thought...
Does anyone watch 2 humans play chess?.... yes
Does anyone watch a human play a computer at chess?... yes
Does anyone watch 2 computers play chess? no

on the other side of that battle bots is fun to watch because of the destruction...

I think here will need to be some contact. This could turn out to be a shoving match between computer controlled cars...
