    Default Audi RS7 did a 2:01 at Sonoma.....driverless...

any day now, driverless car will be faster than one with a driver......

    Audi RS7 driverless car

Audi’s piloted driving program is even closer to being consumer-ready after turning a few unpiloted laps at Sonoma Raceway in California. The automated RS7 Sportback, nicknamed “Robby,” completed the 12-turn, 2.5-mile course in 2 minutes, 1.01 seconds, according to the company.

if you think about it. driverless car should be quite a bit faster. if you remove driver and safe equipment (who you protecting ?), roll cage, seats, steering wheel, fire system, crumple zone, door bar, harness......
driverless car can easily be 600LB lighter.

I would like to see some good video on that testing, with good audio that might divulge slip angles, etc.

At 5 seconds slower than the spec miata record and 4 times spec miata power, I'm guessing there was no loss of traction ever.

And it is a 560 HP car...., but I guess you already said that at "5 times."

Also, what kind of tires were on the car? Was it stock power?

I like the idea of driverless cars, especially in the hands of most drivers, but if I were an Audi engineer, I'd prep the car to reflect well on the work I had done, which includes sticky tires and power over the production model's figures.

I can't imagine why anyone thinks this is good news. What are we going to have now, driverless cars racing each other on road courses? What's the point of that?

We are probably watching the potential end of amateur car racing. In 10 to15 years you won't need a drivers license to have a self driving car drive your around.

This is true. We don't have clothes washing competitions because machines have been doing that for us since most of us were sperm. but I bet there used to be epic medieval garment washing competitions.

The point? Driverless car is like Legal Zoom. The point is to make every job, every activity, and every person irrelevant in the name of progress. How else can we have the free time (code for joblessness) to contemplate the liberal utopia?

I have seen the Legal.Zoom documents in the legal fields in which I practice. They are garbage. If a lawyer drafted those documents and provided them to every one of his clients, he'd be sued for malpractice. Legal.Zoom gets away with it because they skirt the issue by saying "we are not a lawyer -- we provided the document based on our client's instructions." What utter Bull$h!t. One size does not fit all in the law, and I don't think it does in car racing either.

Hardly. Lots of competitive horse riding, and horses haven't been a commuter vehicle in quite some time.
