That is a good turn-out. 140+ cars for time attack is about 70 cars per day. It is good to see the interest. How many of these events are held each year?

I find that their is almost zero percent chance the car show guys do a track day. Going on track just seems to go against their interests. They are more interested in looking like they are going fast more so than actually doing so. Maybe the Gingerman geography is different, but in SoCal, the birthplace of car culture in the world, the show guys can barely name the local tracks.

Last year for SRF as a separate class; starting in 2018 the cars will be merged into a single class nationally, although some regions might run a Gen2 class.

To be honest, though, there's been a very limited amount of blowback for the Gen3 conversion (as compared to the Renault->Ford conversion which was fraught with horror stories), and by all account the cars are a ton more fun.

If I could just keep things together I'm gonna try and do a track day in a Gen3 this winter.

Per day? Most of the time attack guys run all weekend. It sort of runs like a NASA event with drift as well. They are working on wheel to wheel as well. They are doing a CRE in partnership with SCCA at the Atlanta event at the end of august. They do two big festival events a year, with concerts. One at gingerman and one at road atlanta. They do regular time attack/hpde events all season.

I think you would be surprised what exposure can accomplish. For example, I raced motocross my whole life. I had no idea track days even existed. Had I known how accessible it is, I would have started 5 years sooner. Give these kids rides right seat and be inclusive and you will be more likely to grow the sport. Maybe not every person. However, even 1 out of 20 would be a good thing.

I'm looking into Gen3 now. It seems like Gen3 is a success because relatively cheap engine upgrade, low rebuild cost, and faster. So lots of wins. Gen3 seems like SM with real racecars and huge track record of driver safety with big fields. I think I read Gen3 will be the class and gen 2 goes away after 2018 and might be in regional class only. A new build in gen3 kit is $38K. That is very attractive. I think what racing needs is the ELAN NP01 closed cockpit sports racer at Gen3 prices. That SRF 80's body is just past it's prime visually.

Gen2 cars will be welcome to run in SRF Nationally, but given that they are close to 3 seconds a lap slower at Thunderhill, for example, it wouldn't be a lot of fun.

    Over 900 entries total.

And, I agree, SRF3 looks like an awesome class!

I just got this email from SCCA:

    Dear Runoffs registrants:
As you’re probably aware, over the last week, you’ve made history, becoming a part of the largest-ever pre-event entry for an SCCA road race! Within the first 24 hours of the 2017 SCCA National Championship Runoffs registration opening, we had 763 entries. Less than a week later, we’re north of 900. When you consider the highest entry count for a Runoffs is 709 (in 2004), it’s likely that more records will fall as we head to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

We’ve received a number of calls and e-mails, and wanted to address some of the popular topics and share a few reminders.

    SCHEDULE
The schedule posted on the Runoffs event page remains unchanged. As noted on the schedule, the final qualifying timeline will be posted by September 2, when we have a more complete picture of the class entry counts. Section 2.2 of the event supplemental regulations addresses class oversubscription.

    TEST DAYS
At midnight (CDT) on Wednesday, July 26, drivers will be able to enter additional test days. Test days are accessible by editing your event entry through MotorsportReg.

    Oscar,

I have lesser goals. My plan is to end up in the upper 1/2 of the field. If I come say "Hi" at Indy will you give me some tips?

Of course. Team West Coast. Once we all have our pit assignments, we should share on THQ so people can find each other.

And no guarantees my suggestions are any good!

My Orange T2 vette will be living in Garage B-29. Come by and say Hi! There will be a lot of down time with 1 qualy session per day. I'm looking for places to go fishing in the local area if anyone is interested in wetting a line. Also, I want to see the IMS museum in downtown if people want to go see that.

Places that sound interesting to try...How do you think I got the name fatbillybob?
Filet Sliders at Harry & Izzy’s
    Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles
    Corned-Beef Hash at Peppy Grill
The Bourbon Burger at Bru Burger Bar
Between the Bun hotdog & burgers
    Long's Bakery
