Why does this asshole drive a new, 500hp Porsche GT3-RS on a racetrack in shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes, NO HELMET, and an OEM 3-point belt?

At least he laments the lack of a manual gearbox . . .

    'Cuz Germany, Richard.

I can't take anything Chris Harris says seriously after his blatant Chevy Volt advertisement disguised as a review. He also does not like the Miata.
But that GT3 is a perfect looking car.

Chris Harris is a hack. All he does is drift around. He never actually tries to drive fast or provide any useful insight into the vehicle dynamics. His scripts are filled with hyperbole and a bunch of stuff we already know. His interviews are annoying, self-centered and lack any real insight. Nothing artful or new. I can think of a half a dozen other journalists or personalities I would rather have reviewing cars. Caswell would blow this guy out of the water.

That said, kudos to this monkey for landing the gig.

I like watching people thrash around in cars I'll never get to drive. In some of his videos he gives very detailed analysis and does hot laps compared to other cars on the same day and track. I think the limiting factor is the cars owner. He mentioned having limited time in this vid. If he had his way he probably would have taken the car to Silverstone.

I think CH is one of the best automotive journalists in the world. His car control is right up there with anyone and he typically turns a 'fast'/'clean' lap in many of his reviews, especially comparisons. Not sure how anyone would call him a 'hack'. I tend to agree with everything he says on cars that i've also driven and put high value on his input and reviews for those that I havn't driven.

Chris Harris is jewel of a journalist. Here is an example of his elevated, well reasoned insight.

"...sportscars are supposed to be exciting. And the MX-5 isn’t exciting. An Elise is exciting because it’s a proper sports car..."

And his opinion of the Miata is well qualified.

"Truth be told, I think MX-5s are, well, sh*t."
"[the Miata] drives with all the precision of a boneless limb."

    Haters gonna hate indeed.

I get that the Miata is not as awesome as the Ferrari Mr. Harris parks in his garage, but everything is relative.

I don't hate, he's too boring to hate. I just recognize talent or lack thereof, when I see it. You guys that drool over his reviews, have not been exposed to a brilliant reviewer for anything else I'm guessing. Trust me, Mr Harris is barely more qualified than I am, not as qualified (or good at reviewing) as Billy. Are CH's reviews better than nothing? The videography, sound and editing are good. Otherwise, I'll stick to the writing from any number of print magazines.

PJ O'Rourke was a brilliant journalist that happened to do some great car related stuff. Jean Lindamood was/is great. CH would be an unpaid intern around those writers.

edit: That he bashes Miatas plays no part in my being bored by him. I'd be bored regardless.

Ahhh.... I had forgotten how much I miss PJ's writing. His monthly articles in C&D (?) were a definite high point back in the day. So tempted to get this now:

And, let's face it, personality matters; and his sincere enthusiasm really does make him a natural. At least for me.

Actually, I have never seen anything hateful from Emilio. Opinionated, yes. Hateful, no.

Frank opinions and unique perspectives make it a round world - and a pretty decent forum.

I quite enjoy Mr. Harris' reviews. Mostly just entertainment, but with a bit of information sprinkled around (akin to the now defunct Top Gear's recipe).

His Goodwood podiums seem to indicate, at the very least, he a decent driver as well.

Do note that if you are ever lucky enough to drive this part of Germany (on your way to the Nurbergring), stay off the Autobahn and follow the Rhein river south from Cologne/Bonn (highway B42) to Koblenz, and then take local roads through the magical countryside. You won't even be upset if your lap times aren't quite what they were on GT6.

I enjoy chris harris videos for what they are, entertainment. He talks about cars, drives them in a way that makes for pretty pictures and good sounds. Emilio you're right about him as journalist in comparison to other more traditional and traditionally trained journalist. I see him more of an entertainer and he's a pioneer for pushing the automotive journalism market forward as an independent. His business model is going to be the ground floor for many very very good automotive journalists in the future.

I'm not a fanboi but I've seen all of his videos. These two from goodwood this last year are my two favorite. Very little talking, lots of driving... very very good driving (non hack driving imo). I am not capable of watching these video's and saying he has no talent. The 911 race in particular is a fantastic piece of video. Also if you go digging... he did a few video segments before he decided to go it solo on a few group c cars that were also spectacular pieces of video.

I quite enjoy Chris Harris' work. I think those that don't just have a very different set of expectations and his style doesn't fit that.

I'm sure we all have friends who fall into different categories - some of our friends like cars enough, but you know you can't get too technical or their eyes will gloss over - you stick to "yeah, the V8 has a lot of power" type comments. Then there are car guys, and whatever facet of automotive engineering, driving, racing history, etc. comes up, you guys can carry on a conversation sprinkled with cool car-nerd facts and you can share a genuine appreciation for the thing because you're on the same level. CH falls into the latter category. He's not an engineer or a pro driver, he's one of the dudes and he shares a passion and knowledge of all things automotive. That's where the style and delivery of his work is so successful - you feel like you're walking alongside, hanging out, and drooling over something cool with him. He hasn't spent hours coming up with fancy metaphors to use in the video, and he isn't writing a technical journal, he's the guy you'd go to Cars and Coffee with and spend a couple hours just walking around, chatting, and having a good time - complete with the occasional boyish "oooooooh" at something really cool or rare. The style is very relatable wich makes for easy, enjoyable viewing and the often VERY cool subject matter that he has the opportunity to cover completes the recipe.

wow it got serious as fk in here, I was just kidding around... I DGAF whether you like or dislike the guy, one of the only video of his I have seen is the P1 which is more like car porn than a review.

have a good memorial day weekend
