Default which 80s and later collectors car would you buy for keep

had been thinking: if you have a budget say $100k to buy 10 cars for future collectible. what would you buy ?

I think next generation of wealthy want something from their era. not Mustang or Hemi.

    1. must be 80s and later.
    2. relatively cheap to maintain. that means no Fiat or Maserati !!
    3. not too expensive now. nothing over $30k to buy.
    4. no Ferrari, McLaren, high-end Porsche, high-end BMW, high-end AMD, etc. see #3.
    5. must be future collectible. not something wacky to fit your taste.
    6. must be legal to drive and was sold in U.S. originally. so no R34
    7. no muscle car. that market is pretty much covered already.
    8. that can be enjoyed w/o mods. Silvia and AE86 would be a fine example. I don't think I'll ever enjoy it stock.

my short list of cars I would like to own would be:

    Evo 9 MR.
    Integra Type R
CRX - SI (what year is special ?)
    3rd Gen RX7 (R2 ?)
    S2K CR
    NA Miata with R package
    Audi Quattro
    E30 M3
    323GTX
    Buick GNX

    A Honda S2000 and a S600. I know the S600 is not 1980+ but I can't think of another non-exotic collectible I'd rather buy.

don't think you can even get Supra Turbo for under $30k. don't think NA will ever be collectible.

I think the only S2K that will ever be collectible will be the CR. I personally would never touch S600. it is a cool car, but not a car I would enjoy driving.

I've been thinking about this a lot. why not put some money in things I enjoy instead of stocks. should of thought of this 6 months ago, when stock market was still healthy

I can do it slowly, do some research, buy a best unmolested example I can find. just need to find a place to park them all.

I'd get myself a low mileage, bone stock MKIV Supra 6-Speed, and not care about buying nine other cars. MKIV is my dream car.

I like the third gen RX7 but not with the original factory engine though.
I also like to have a 6sp SMT MR-S again if i get the chance.

actually busy right now. but am losing my mind after I check my stock portfolio

so remember this is also an investment too (at least not losing badly on depreciation). not just something I enjoy, but cars that won't lose value over time.

I only made money on a collectible car once. I had a 1967 Fiat Dino Spyder that I bought for $7,250 and sold about 8 years later for $38,000 (a long long time ago). It was running when I bought it but not when I sold it.

Most of the time, car collecting is pretty risky.

    collectible is so subjective tho!

especially when you said "what would you buy for keep"

i don't quite understand #4 & #5, or my list could be a little different

Collectible means the market price eventually goes UP, not DOWN. Hopefully WAY UP.

How did everyone forget about the little Porsche 944 Turbo. Great car and still holds a great value all things considered. If it was in excellent shape it'd fetch a really good price once its considered a classic in 20 years.

yes, that was a great car !! but with 911 lurking, not sure if it will ever become valuable. there is always a joke about it being a truck engine.

Spec 944's suck. Slower than Spec Miatas for sure. Spec E30s suck too.

I know these are not 944 Turbos and E30 M3s you are talking about, but at the races I like the Miata the best of the 3. This post has nothing to do with collectibility I guess. Don't think either one will be collectible though.

All Porsches that aren't 911s, built since the first 911s anyway, are unloved. It remains to be seen if the boxster/cayman buck this trend, but nobody wants a 912, 914, 924, 944, 968 or 928.

I think the EVO VI Tommy Makkinen Edition should be on there somewhere, that was a pretty cool looking car. Oh yeah, and the Lancia Delta HF Integrale was pretty sweet too.

I think cars that were not available from the manufacturer in the USA should not be on the list. How many EVO VI TM editions are there in the USA, and what would one cost you? Same for the Lancia.
