At the rear end has a rather crappy rear trailing arm to contend with, the motion ratio require the spring rates to be about 3:1 to the front. The idea is to have the rates so stiff that you get zero compression out of the rear shocks. Any travel toes the rear out significantly and unpredictably under load. Look at the RealTime racing cars they had to do some pretty edgy stuff to get the car too cooperate. I basically just put a HUGE bar on the back so it would rotate on corner entry well before it decided to snap mid corner, for me it was the lesser of the two evils and in the end the car was actually fast and placed 2nd against seas of s2ks in vtec challenges. Its easy to dump money into an RSX just to get it to a 'good starting point'

The motor is what really shines but if I were to be forced back into FF i would just get a newer SI where Honda solved all of these problems and you still get the K series motor.
All I did to my EP3 was to add stiffer springs, Konis and a big ass rear sway (Progress, IIRC). It was entertaining, but you had to be comfortable trailbraking or LFB to rotate it. Coincidentally, my stock '92 Integra RS I traded in for the SI was more fun at the track and all that car had was Tockico Illuminas and tiny 14" sticky tires.

That costs 4 times as much as a 2zz boosted spyder with the same powertrain and laptimes. It also cant carry cold drinks in the front trunk.

the mazda 2 is basically a fwd miata

    2300lb's + 100hp = tons of fun
We did not get the "first gen" Yaris in the states, we got the second iteration in 2007, and it features a beam rear axle. Being as new as most of these B segments cars are, there are a lot of quicker ways around the track for less money, and most of them are not fast enough to raise your pulse in stock form.

That said, with a few bolt-ons one can be made to lap about as fast as Spec Miata at most tracks. Sub 2min at ACS in a Yaris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B86E...mW_FVnyuubVjsw

I had a fun battle with a stripped, caged Yaris in my NA6 at Streets. I was surprised how well it stuck with me.

Boxster, yes. Cayman, heeeell no. Consumables cost is high oh and the oil starvation and power steering overheating problems render it highly suspect for reliability. Great platform though.

Most spec boosters are built on the 986 chassis. Cayman started with 987. Different cars. If you move up to the 987.2 Cayman chassis, it's bullet proof. They changed to a new DFI motor and upgraded the power steering cooler. I tracked one for 2 years with 0 issues. Problem is, buy in is $45-50K and that hardly fits in this group. Consumables still high also.

Lol. I have had 2 of the cars on your list (at the top of the thread).

Issue with the mr2 is they never made them in enough numbers so parts are hard to come by.

Rx8... Not enough potential. Too heavy, too hard to get more power out of them without an engine sub. (.....and I have one). There is one being raced very competitively here but it has a 13b in it I think.

    Crown Vic.

Police proven reliability and ruggedness. Tons of parts. V8. Built in "cage." Enough storage space to bring your track-Miata in the trunk with spares.

I want to get one, put lights on it, and pull over ricers in the beginner groups.

I was very very close to running one of these as a dirt car, then they turned around and banned all fuel injection. D'oh!

I always ask myself what I'd track if the S2000 didn't exist. I don't know what car it would be, but it for sure wouldn't be anything mentioned in this thread. lol.

    I haven't seen many 2000 lb Caymans.

    image_400.jpg

I developed that car to show a Boxster could go sub 2000 lbs a few years ago. Got it down to 1975 lbs. Sold it a couple years ago but it was a hoot with gt3 suspension and lots of stuff spec Boxsters couldn't run. It has a 2.7 motor with hot cams. It's on national SCCA ax circuit now. It would be tough going to make a heavy cayman that light.
