How about Nissan 240sx. I know Richard thinks they are just good for drift cars. But in reality they are great handling right out of the box and have a good aftermarket support.

Fell the same about the Miata. It's always been thought of as a good track/street/pizza getting puddle jumper!

Yes I have driven a Mini (and liked it), but no, not a Neon. Thank goodness.

Totally agree about the 240sx. The trick is finding one that hasn't been too, umm, "modified". Here is a decent one we wrote up recently. I would love to see more at the track set up for road racing as opposed to slammed for looks.

I always liked the 240. I was considering them when I bought my first Miata.

Which generation GTI are we talking about? The MK3 & MK4 are pigs IMO….well the MK3 4 cylinder isn’t too bad I guess.

I think you guys have me confused with Seth.

I'm 6'2" 175lbs. I think my girlfriend is close to the same dimensions, minus a few inches. I like them Amazonian.

I don't think the RX8 is underrated. It was raced here profesionally for some time and I think everyone is aware of its capabilities. The engine is useless though.

I mentioned it because they don't seem to be very popular despite their capabilities.

I vote "no" on the RSX. I had both the EP3 (02-05 Civic Si) and the DC5 (RSX). Both platforms have MacP fronts, DW rears. A lot of pro teams stayed away from both here and went straight for the TSX for its DW F&R suspension and chassis rigidity.

Of the two, though, I prefered the EP3 over the DC5. The car felt slightly better balanced, better seats, and as funky as it is...the shifter location is pretty awesome. If Honda hadn't shat all over it by denying it the K20a2 the RSX-S had, it would have fared better against other cars in that segment. Excellent road-tripper.

A friend of mine has a S13 240sx that he tracks in SoCal. Good car but I don't agree that it works out of the box. He has had to do way too many things to it in order to make it turn and stop. Also plenty is not adjustable from factory for alignment and it's still slow in a straight line without a SR or something similiar.

Although I do come from the Miata world so my concept on "out of the box" may be a little skewed...

I mentioned this in another thread, but the Mazda BG chassis is largely underrated.

The Mazda BG was shared with Ford, which called it CT120.
    1989 Eunos 100 (hatchback)
    19891993 Mazda Familia (sedan)
    19891993 Mazda Familia (hatchback)
    19891993 Mazda Familia Astina (hatchback)
    19891993 Ford Laser Coupe (coupe)
    19891993 Ford Laser Sedan (sedan)
19912002 Ford Escort (North America, not Europe too!)
    19911999 Mercury Tracer
19982003 Ford Escort ZX2 (North America)
    19951997 Kia Sephia

Protege, Escort, Tracer, Mx-3,323, ZX2 and Kia Sephia. The 91-96 Escort GT can be found cheeeeap ($500-2000), thought the '96 is the only OBD2 model and limits a lot of your options. You would get the same 1.8 DOHC motor found in the Miata of that vintage, configured for FWD. Megasquirt makes a PnP for it. This opens up all the engine tech developed for the Miatas over the years PLUS direct swapping of the turbo variants found in other Mazda models not sold here (GTX and GTR 1.8 turbo). On top of that the MX-3 1.8 V6 model is the missing link that had components to swap in the Mazda KL series V6 motors (MX-6 and Probe GT) into the BG chassis. The rear multi link is symetrical so salvaging another lateral off any Escort gave you adjustable toe on either rear wheel for $5. Mazdaspeed developed the chassis for race applications in Japan with some pretty interesting suspension add-ons. Front and rear camber plates, special-valved shocks, chassis reenforcements, etc.

If you want to go full-retard on your secretary's car for the track, Pierce Motorsports in Torrance makes tubular suspension pieces and lightweight body panels. (Results for 91-96 Ford Escort)

I believe they will make tubular front arms, too, if requested.

Using a VIN from a Mazda, you can use the Mazdacomp site for discounted parts.

I forgot about the yaris, good little car too and I believe the first gen we got here also has the added benefit of having independent suspension all the way around (vitz cup car ftw).

I will say though, having driven the fit, fiesta, 2 and yaris in stock form the 2 was the best of the bunch by a long shot in my eyes.

the mazda 2 is basically a fwd miata

    2300lb's + 100hp = tons of fun

I fit the same track day stuff in the MR-S that I did in the NC miata.

2 fold up chairs, 2 duffle bags, 1 helmet, 1 small toolbox, 1 ice chest, 1 small jacks,

For the MR-S if you remove the soft top install a rollbar and hardtop then there is more room behind the seats.

Also the front trunk for the MR-S is plastic and can serve various uses.

    Built-in Beer cooler?

There are few 2100lb cars you can drive to the track with air conditioning, power windows and stereo.

Agreed with Force on the RSX, Ive owned and tracked 2 different ones and you have to drive the car in spite of the platform. Front end has a super high steering rack, zero factory caster, and when lowered even half an inch only about 2 inches of suspension travel remain. At the rear end has a rather crappy rear trailing arm to contend with, the motion ratio require the spring rates to be about 3:1 to the front. The idea is to have the rates so stiff that you get zero compression out of the rear shocks. Any travel toes the rear out significantly and unpredictably under load. Look at the RealTime racing cars they had to do some pretty edgy stuff to get the car too cooperate. I basically just put a HUGE bar on the back so it would rotate on corner entry well before it decided to snap mid corner, for me it was the lesser of the two evils and in the end the car was actually fast and placed 2nd against seas of s2ks in vtec challenges. Its easy to dump money into an RSX just to get it to a 'good starting point'

The motor is what really shines but if I were to be forced back into FF i would just get a newer SI where Honda solved all of these problems and you still get the K series motor.

While it is true that there is no space for your boyfriend and your little pocket-sized dog, this is about underrated track cars. The only thing you need space for is a barf bag, which you will need because the MRS is capable of obtaining G-forces that Miata owners will ever see if they strap their car to centrifuge used to train astronauts. This is because the Miata has a motor on the wrong side of the car, and all those OEM beauty accessories make it heavier.
