Default 292 hp 2015 Golf Type R at Buttonwillow

No indication of what tires they were using.

Kind of pricey compared to Ford ST's and the old Speed Mazda's, but it does seem like a pretty willing week end track car and week day grocery getter.

You can't turn off the stability control in the Golf. Total bummer if you want to drive the car fast.

Strange not to be able to do this on a $40K "performance" car.

We need to put VW on time-out for this. That's ridiculous.

I've been following this car for quite a while...
    • You can disable all the nannies on the Golf R, but not on the GTI or the Golf. European GTI doesn't have this restriction, VWoA loves to screw its customers.
    • "Only" 3300lbs in Euro spec, quite light for a 300HP AWD car. USDM curb weight not disclosed yet..
    • MY2015 will only come with DSG, MY2016 will bring a manual transmission option. Sadly no 2 door for the US.
    • Same engine as the next gen Audi S3 and Audi TTS

Only a ECU refresh (goapr.com) away from this:

The only reason that even worst tuners can get away with something like that is because the engine management on the modern turbo cars is so freaking sophisticated that it is almost impossible to hurt the engine. But i can guarantee that on a good August day at BRP with 91 CA gas the engine will revert back to stock or even less than stock power in 1-2 laps.

True, but I feel almost every new car in showroom condition will have cooling issues and lose power after a few hot laps, specially boosted ones. If you can cool the car however, the dyno chart above (93 oct) is a good indication of what you can achieve. Anyone serious in CA will splash some race gas or octane booster at the track..

BTW the car has been out in Europe for about a year, plenty of videos on Youtube already for anyone curious

If they had brought the 2 door version with the manual, I'd been very tempted...

The problem is not the heat only. The old R32 had the great 5 cylinder engine and some people were making good an reliable power on it.Even though the TFSI is direct injection it cannot hold much more in stock form.I mean, for a track abuse.

When did the R32 have a 5 cylinder? I thought they used the 3.2 liter VR6.

I had never heard of the VR5, not sure it ever made it to the US in a production vehicle. I was thinking of the inline 5s we had here.

    Both VR6 & VR5 are 15 degree narrow V engines. VR5 is Europe only; last R32 in the states came with a 3.2 VR6.

The 2.5 inline 5 is the standard US Golf/Jetta engine.

Yes, I aways thought the 2.5 liter inline 5 was half of the 5.0 V10.

I remember with the older versions you couldnt fit wide wheels on these cars. Are the Golfs still limited to relatively narrow wheels?
