    That's always been a head-scratcher for me. What's so clever about going 4-off in order to pass someone? Why not just cut across the infield instead? Under what sort of racing rules was he not required to give the position back??

    IIRC, There was no supplementary rule in CART about track boundaries at that time for Laguna Seca (there were cutting rules for Portland and various street courses, however). People just ...didn't pass at the Corkscrew like that, nor did they even think of it.

    Then Rossi did the same thing to Stoner on two wheels a few years ago.

    Both passes shouldn't have worked, but they did anyway. I still think they're cool.

    Impressive that he managed to stick that pass with all the speed he lost and all the crap his tyres would have picked up going off the track.

    i had a family friend working in CART at the time and he and my dad were all over this so i remember it pretty vividly. so awesome...
