I believe the trunk extension is to improve the efficiency of the tunnels, which was the center piece of the whole car, which is part of the reason that it was outlawed. They basically cut out a huge section of the rear(frame rails included) to create a rear tube frame set up which created a lot of space for the tunnels. There was a modification to the 2011 rules to allowed the Revolution Rx7 to compete which was basically tube frame in rear as well. This then created a gap in the rules for NEMO to be created. You can read about it here: Finding Nemo

Brilliant? I'd love to hear from him MUCH more often, but he is understandably silent on aero issues. I launched my "education" on aero by following his build of the Eclipse.

No need to go that far, some of the local hairdressers have been running that way for a while

Incidentally, I actually do run a spoiler (of questionable functionality) under my wing. A remnant from my street setup. Was too lazy to remove it. Maybe I'll keep it.

We were going to run one, but the rules for GTA doesn't allow it for limited class.

From my understanding, at minimum the downforce counts of the wing and spoiler simply added together, and when optimized and they were more efficient than just the individual counts. More so with tunnels or a diffuser.

I'm not liking these front wings. They upset the appearance of the car. Form does not always follow function...

That third wing on the Tilton is very interesting though.

Question: What is the purpose of those horizontal plates behind the rear tires? I've seen diffusers behind tires, but I've always wonders about their efficacy. I would expect the area behind a tire to be a low pressure area.

When in doubt always look for answer in DTM. These were/are the most aerodynamically advanced racers with a stock-ish car like shape.

I'm interested in the theory. What are they supposed to do? Why do they do that?
It's academic for me. I'll never have the patience, or the skill, to fab up a similar device.

My guess is channeling the air that exits the rear wheel well.

DTM is still very regulated though in terms of aerodynamics, where WTAC and Time Attack has very few aero regulations. Tires create a lot of vortices as air coming off of them is what is referred to as dirty air. You want to isolate the dirty air from certain parts of the car to improve the efficiency of other aero components.

They do stick out a bit much I must admit, but there is definitely function there...

This is what happens with you have mega bucks, and have to comply to VERY strict aero regulations.

New attendee just announced. Wheels pushed out almost beyond the width of the original car - it's all about the aero (underneath).

Potentially a contender for the top spot. IF it all comes together in 8 days. AFAIK, it hasn't even had a shake-down.

With 8 days left, cars are coming together and pics are surfacing - everyone can show what they're bringing to the table now that it's late enough that others can't copy.

JDMYard Civic got the knob turned up a few notches this year:

If the history of motorsports is any indication, the chance of a car that has yet to even be shaken down to take the win is close to zero.

Does anyone know what happened to the ARK GTR this year? Did no one want to give them budget to go back? Third times the charm right....
