I haven't stated this in public often but William was perhaps as important to our endurance racing wins as the outright speed from my tech and tuning. We needed both to win by big margins as we did, but only his strategic calls to win. Us drivers and mechanics tend to focus on the car, our driving and relegate that team function to a lesser role.

These charts, that's like the lines of code in the Matrix. William glances at it and instantly sees weaknesses, strengths, loopholes, errors and ultimately, race winning strategy. You remember our 5 class sweep at Buttonwillow a few years back? While I'd like to believe it was John's car prep, my tuning, Andrews driving, Gordon's toughness, the small crews resourcefulness.. it was 100% William's on the spot genius that earned us that. T25? Same deal. Early on in our racing efforts, I shared strategy calls with him. I'm pretty good at it I think, maybe even above average. IOW, I'd lose races occasionally due to bad strategy calls. Like any reasonably competent manager however, one needs to swallow their ego and delegate when someone better equipped is available. Not just saying this because he's a good friend, but I think he's the best at that task I have ever seen or heard of in NASA enduros. No other manager would have made those calls in the 5 class sweep. Ever. Not to take anything away from the other successful teams out there, but I had my eyes opened.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

The two F1 drivers (one past, one present) were each bested in fastest lap times by both of their co-drivers...

I understand the info, the snapshot gestation, but it's a little messy graphically-speaking.

I also agree about William's prowess on this data. Putting together a chumpcar or lemons team here, after experiencing Will's abilities at T25, the FIRST guy I reached out to is an actuary who enjoys HPDE. He didn't want to drive, or really work on the car, but when I started telling him what I wanted him for, his eyes lit up and he started imagining the huge role he would have and became really excited. This guy, when I stop by his house, his 'casual reading' are books about mathematics and theory.

Some people like wrenching, others love driving, some like digesting the data to formulate strategies. You need all types to be successful, and you need the egos that handle when one trumps the other.

As much as I like driving, I know I am not really that good. I do enjoy a little of everything, but I favor preparation, anticipation and scenarios that lead to consistency, the most.

Wow, Patrick Long's fast lap is 8 sec's quicker than his team mate's fast lap.

Setting a fast time in an enduro might get you shot by your team's strategist.

yeap....Nico Hulkenberg stunt - with 40 minutes to go, in the rain, beating Audi by something like 4 laps, still set a time only 8 seconds (in an 8 mile course) off fastest dry time - If it was my call, would of pulled him in. beat the crap out of him.

Hulkenberg is an idiot endurance driver.....
