Default 1964 Popular Mechanics tests 5 muscle cars at Willowsprings, none break 2min laps

"A fast race car, with racing rubber, can turn the Willowsprings course in 1 minute 40 seconds at best."

Amazing that you can buy stock cars now with half the horsepower and beat 1:40.

    That's pretty cool!

You gotta respect the old muscle cars. They were the hot ticket for their time 50 years ago. Yeah, my mother's 2002 Honda Accord could probably lap WSIR faster than those old musclecars but it'd never be as much fun.

The other articles are cool, too.

I liked that military surplus ad where you could buy an M1 carbine rifle for $20. ;-)

Tire technology has come a long way too. If you put on newer tires on those same older race cars. You would lower the lap times a lot.
But this is a great read.

Those 1/4 miles times....pretty sure a stock 1.8 Miata would beat them. I remember my stock 1.6 Miata ran times a little slower, maybe.

You have to love the 'impressionistic' track maps of WSIR in use back then.

Even Carroll Shelby had it kind of funny.

Wow Jack! I have driving Turn Two wrong all these years. I should be carrying more speed through Two than Eight now that I see the map.

Look at that turn 1! Also known as the front straight kink. Obviously, everyone should be able to go flat out through there, like turn 7.

    You're just being nostalgic
Every number in the article says "turd" all over it.
If you were given any one of these cars with something like a modern Kia body draped on it you'd say it's the biggest pile you've ever driven.

Those motors had impressive output. 4xx ft/lbs torque? Yes, please.

The tires and transmissions are the major limiting factors IMO. Did they coat tires in Vaseline back then or something?

Why would you coat Vaseline in more Vaseline?

Well, the Pontiac Grand Prix was over 4000 lbs. I'm sure that didn't help.
