Good thoughts. I would be pulling an enclosed trailer so would leave all the crap in there.

My first concern is always how the vehicle will age. Load-leveling independent rear suspensions are great, but they can be pricey to fix, and IRS SUVs are worthless—and borderline unsafe—as tow vehicles if the system doesn't work.

As I have said before, I prefer pickups for a couple of reasons 1) the passenger compartment is separate from the cargo area; I don't have to smell gas jugs and rubber on the way to and from the track, and 2) I can carry messy things in the bed (engine parts) and just hose it out when I get home; 3) bulletproof solid axle and leaf springs; 4) they are incredibly handy to have for everyday suburban life.

I have towed with the Tundra, Titan and all the domestics. Properly equipped, they all do the job well. Your choice inevitably will boil down to personal preference.

This is a solid recommendation spoken from experience. I have towed over 20,000 mile each year for the past five years and I concur.

As an analog, look at big truck tractors. The have "live" axle rear ends, big digits and multi-gear trannies, diesel, etc. some of those rigs will tow a million miles or more in two to four years. I would say they know something.

A good truck chassis, tow proven tranny and suspension is a must.

Yesterday i got the ram 2500 megacab diesel with all the trimmings. You'll like the hemi and dodge is really making nice interiors. So I got a suburban 2500 4x4 with 8.1 liter motor with 130k miles if anyone wants one or it goes to carmax next week.

Congrats Carl! Now we have matching cars and trucks . Except mine will probably always look more redneck than yours . Oh and you better be sitting down when Carmax gives you a quote for that Suburban. I sold my 8.1L avalanche to them a few years ago.

Congrats Hakeem! Those new durangos are very cool. Same with the new jeeps. The interiors are really nice in the new Dodge/Chryslers.

Apparently can tow 7400lbs. Thing feels like it has twice the power of my 7.4 Suburban so don't doubt it. Picking up new enclosed trailer this weekend that weighs 2900lbs. Should work out nicely.

Mpg is 14/20 apparently. It has that 4 cylinder mode thing. Love the truck so far.

Great purchase. I love the Cummins but no way the wife was going to let me get a pickup. Wish they made a diesel Durango.

Has the Dodge or Ram Dakota been discontinued? I don't see it on either site.

Edit: after trying this new thing called Google, I found out that the Dakota has been axed for 2012.

When I was looking at Suburbans last year, for reference, a loaded up 03 with the 8.1 liter around 110k miles was ~$11k.

Does it come with a transmission cooler? I've looked but can't find the answer. All I see is something like heavy duty engine cooling.

Good question. It is not explicitly mentioned as part of the towing package. I did find this though which suggests that it does have a cooler:

Here is the X5 home made tranny cooler-not huge, but tremendous improvement over the OEM coolant/fluid heat exchanger. As this car runs over 210 F on the freeway the stock heat exchanger may rather heat up the tranny fluid.

Porsche will get the diesel option in the Cayenne in 2013. It's still the same engine as the VW but you get a Porsche crest for the extra $10k.
