Don't need to be fast, just solid.

Diesel relies mostly on torque, but 4 cyl and 181hp is really low for towing. Keeping the momentum shouldnt be a problem for the Miata drivers

This torque thing, I think it gets you moving from a standstill and gets you good fuel economy, I don't think it gets you up to 65 any faster.

I'm pretty sure I'm buying a truck this year but my wife wants to keep the Aspen around too. Since I want a truck but can tow my trailer well enough with my Aspen, I'm considering the Canyon diesel as a daily driver. If I buy one, I'm sure I'll try towing my 6,000 pound enclosed car hauler at some point just to see how it does.

The Canyon is just on the list along with the Ram 1500 EvoDiesel and the Titan XD Cummins. I have to see how the '16 prices stack up and drive them all too.

BTW, I'm not positive about the curb weights but the Canyon/Colorado diesel could have a better power to weight ratio than a similarly equipped Ram EcoD.

I just put an order in for a '16 GMC Canyon diesel. I drove a gas version today and liked the way it drove. The diesels haven't begun production but I'd like to have one before the end of the year and there won't be a ton available. It's not even definite I'll get it. We also drove a Sierra Denali which was really nice but a little on the big side. It's sort of the back up plan if the diesel falls through.

I can finally report back from the first long haul tow using the Canyon.

To stoke the memory. I have a 2015 GMC Canyon Crew Cab, short bed, SLT trim with the LFX V6, 6 speed auto and tow package. I towed my 2200lb miata up to MRLS on a craptastic u-haul trailer.

The route was Costa Mesa to Seaside. I took the 405/101 route up and took the 101/46/5/605 route home. I averaged 15 mpg on the entire trip. On the way up I towed mostly at 65mph and averaged 15mpg on the nuts. On the way back over the grapevine I some how managed 16.5 mpg... and I was well above 70-75 for the majority of the trip.

The canyon did a fine job coming up and over the grapevine. It holds a steady 55-60mph up the hill without much issue. I did the run with the ac on, all the accessories going etc. Trans temps never got above 183 (they are typically 145-160 in normal driving) and the manual mode and engine braking on the 6 speed barely required any brake motivation on the way down. Very very happy with how this truck towed. It was solid and confidence inspiring with no waggle. Easily a 1 finger on the steering wheel trip the entire time.

This trailer must have 800lbs on the hitch Uhaul trailers are nose heavy by design, and looks like with a short car loaded all the way to the front is almost ridiculous.

I'm looking really closely at one of these early next year ... if I can get my hands on one.

Eric ... if you get one I'll be interested to hear your impressions.

Unless something changes again, I'm getting a 1/2 ton. I ordered a '16 Silverado 1500, 5.3, 8 speed, Max Tow Package the other day. It can be had with rear seat entertainment system which was important in our house.

Here is my DD/tow vehicle with some upgrades. Tiny 3.0l diesel, still doing the same 21 mpg mixed, when driven sensibly

We may be offering something similar for the new Ram,Grand Cherokee ecodiesel. It has the same Bosch EDC17 engine management and similar fuel system as the X5, so Cummins tuners may be up for an interesting surprise.

Bosch also did the engine management for the ever so popular VW TDI.

Ram 3.0l EcoDiesel comes from VM Motori, not Cummins.

My bad for the poor expression. I meant that Cummins tuners are typically associated with the Dodge/RAM diesel tuning and the EcoDiesel is a completely different ball game. No more cheap tuning equipment and OBD port reflashing. On the table only.
