Digging further into this, it's more than fees, the #11500+ weight bracket calls for a Motor Carrier Permit in CA.
Here's some info I dug up about the MCP -
    https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/de...mcpfaq#whodoes

I don't know about Dodge or GM but Ford offers a free "downgrade package" with the GVWR lowered to #11400 in order to avoid the MCP hassle.

What's the downside of getting an MCP? Reading some of the stipulations you as a race car builder for hire towing a race car to the track with a big truck and trailer could certainly fall into needing an MCP. Does having one mean you have to stop at scales?

That's probably the "not for hire" on the side of the cab.

I think it's just all the extra money in registration fees.

Even if not "for hire", if you're a business doing business activities using large, heavy vehicles what's the big deal about getting the MCP? I'm assuming one or both vehicles will be depreciated on taxes and mileage and/or fuel write offs . . . I'm not trying to shame or anything, just wondering why as a business person would someone try to avoid it. Which is why I asked about scales and maybe it also requires a log book and max daily driving hours. I don't know which is why I'm asking.

I am not operating a towing business nor is my profession racing.
From the reading I have done it seems to me like MCP is -
    1. An unnecesary hassle.
    2. One more bull$hit fee to pay.
    3. Insurance requirements are higher.
    4. God knows what other flaming hoops the DMV requires you to jump through once you have it now...
    5. ^ ...And later.

CA is definitely piling the BS high on towing, I have no intention to voluntarily take part of it if I can avoid it.

I don't disagree about it being another BS fee but wonder what would happen if you get pulled over.

My next tow rig/trailer (that I am currently shopping for) will be properly weighted, just to avoid the BS going through other states.

Also, never utter a sentence with the officer that makes it sound like you make a living in and around race cars.
We got pulled over in Texas on the way to the Runoffs with a friend's Dodge 3500 DRW and 5th wheel 2 car enclosed trailer for being too long and overweight, when we were all within proper guidelines. Then the officers separated my dad and I, and questioned us about 6 different ways trying to get us to admit we were paid to go racing. We said the stickers on the cars were friends of ours, and we put their stickers on haha. My dad said to the cop "All we get is a pat on the back for winning the national championship." Cops held us for 30-45 min, then got a call and let us go.

That's exactly the reason I would be concerned.

    I hear ya, OJR.
However, I have a feeling that the chance of getting pulled over with a SRW pickup towing a toy hauler is a good bit lower than those of a big car trailer with racing decals on it.

The trailer was blank, but agreed.

if william's 2k discount doesn't work, or if it can be combined with an x-plan PIN (ask the dealer if they accept x-plan on your truck), i have friends that work at ford that i can ask for a PIN for you.

    Please do ask!
If I can use either or both, I won't refuse saving a bit extra cash... this month is going to get really expensive between all the new purchases.

    Oww mama!
Picked up the new truck on Saturday in Colorado, flew up there with a friend and drove it back.
Ended up saving almost $4K comparing to all local dealers (that even had one..).
Thanks again for the coupon, William! It worked like a charm
