Default street miata stolen, suggestions for replacement

My dad's 94 miata just got stolen. Damn shame, really nice car just under 100k miles.

He's usually a trucks and suvs only kind of guy, but I managed to convince him to get the miata which he really enjoyed as a fun to drive, easy to park errand runner.

He rarely put the top down though.

What do you guys think he would like as a replacement? He's not afraid of turning wrenches, but has too many projects so e30s are right out.

brz? NC? ND? (he might be too cheap for that one) Not sure he'd be into an s2000, might be a little too awkward getting into and out of. Any ideas?

William has a Ferrari 430 he might part with if you dad makes the right offer.

Maybe an NC PRHT(power retractable hard top for non-Miata nerds)? I personally prefer the looks of the softtop and removable hardtops aren't very easy to find for NCs.

That's a good choice Oli. You only live once and the clock is ticking.

Yeah, because if his dad leaves any money to Rob it will just get spent on fast cars anyway.

You are using the wrong metric. For making a car purchase decision the most effective metric is SPM (Smiles Per Mile).

NC1's are dirt cheap right now. Never really liked the car myself but suits your dad's needs. Also a tiny bit more roomy than the NA/NB.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

This list includes four-doors, which can be handy.

    NC Miata hardtop?
E46 M3? (scrupulously maintained, if he can find one)
    STi?
    Evo?
    Mazdaspeed Miata?

I found the NA Miata to be the best driver's car hands down; however, the MR2 Spyder is a bit more modern and exciting. Given the price and availability of C5 Vettes, I'd recommend one, but it doesn't seem to suit your dad's immediate needs.

How about a "hot hatch"? Very practical with good performance. I own a Fiesta ST as my DD and it's a hoot to drive.

    What are his requirements?

I would vote PRHT NC as well. I don't know what your price range is, however. An NB may also be nicer driver, more refined.

If he isn't afraid to turn a wrench, an e46 with standard features may be a nice car for him too.

997 c2 (or c2s budget permitting). So much car for the money right now. But maybe too nice for what he’s using it for...

Jump in, jump out, snap to park, fun to drive. C5 doesn't quite fit the first 3 points.

Dad must be in good shape if "jump in" and "jump out" is applicable to a Miata for him! That's great! I vote GTI.

Yep, he's doing well. I think my s2000 is tougher to get in an out of due to how far inboard the seat is. Like a less extreme version of lotus square tube you gotta climb over to get in. The corvette has longish doors and is maybe lower? Miatas with their seats so close to the door and door geometry seem a lot easier to me. Also lots of room left since they are fairly narrow when you park them.

for RWD - 997.1 or 997.2. small, nimble, easy to park, at bottom of depreciation curve for few years now (997.1). low-mid 30s buys you a no story 60-75k miles 06+ 997.1 Carrera S.
This is the only "high end" sport car that sits upright. narrow door (helps in parking spot, you young people don't understand), that an elderly gentleman would appreciate.
997 is also one of most reliable cars I've owned. IMS issue is insignificant in 06+.

FWD - choices like Mini Cooper S or GTI are nice. again they sit upright, that your dad would love. But they are wrong wheel drive, and they are nowhere as reliable as a 997.
