    Default SoCal TEST LOCATIONS?

Looking for location to test my car without going to a track in SoCal.
Air Field, Parking Lot, Abandoned Roads, Skid Pads..................

Maybe parts of the old Ridge Route?
What happened to Holtville air field race track?

Grange Circuit just north of Victorville. Bumpy go kart track. Usually $40 and you have the place to yourself during the week. 5 mile dirt road to get there.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

What kind of testing are you looking for? You could hit up one of the local autocross events. Cal Club has an event this weekend at ACS. The Practice Saturday will likely be sold out but with a competing National event the same weekend you might be able to get in. Sunday has no entry cap.

autocross is almost entirely unsuitable for testing a road racing car. Too short to get good heat soak. Too slow to check cooling. Plus it's usually $60 for what amounts to 8 minutes of seat time then you have to stand in a parking lot and shag cones for an hour.

Despite being out in the middle of nowhere, the Grange Circuit looks pretty good for testing. Rental rate is manageable, too.

Grange is one of my favorite kart tracks. Being a kart track the circuit is tight, runoff is limited, and obstacles come up fast. They were in the process of repairing a car size hole in the cinderblock wall when I was there awhile back. It's a similar story at Adams, it's tight.

My two cents: I'm a stick in the mud. The only useful testing I can accomplish away from the track is a quick low-speed check if the car drives straight - and that parts meant to stay on the car don't unexpectedly fall off. Most road race performance testing (e.g. handling) requires a controlled and repeatable environment and that can support forces for a sustained period of time. Factor in dynamics for weight transfer with braking, turning, and acceleration and that requires a sizable space.

Anyone know if Pomona Fairplex is still running that parking lot circuit? Once upon a time I recall there being events there at AX prices.

Didn't they used to run actual road races at that facility?

Yes, there were races from '56-63 - though not quite the same facility in more recent times. The old facility used the dragstrip. The newer facility occupies the same parking lot but does not utilize the drag strip.

I've never driven it, but I've heard favorable reviews. Last event I can recall there was a few years ago - I have no idea if there have been other events since then. Given it's a dual purpose parking lot, scheduling and availability could very well be limited (if it's still operating at all). So in summary, I'm of zero help per usual.

    Some photos from the past:
