    Default NA6 on E85

Made 125whp. Less than we had hoped for but not bad for an untouched Mazda crate motor.
By my math, that's about $4760 invested over a base 1.6.

    $2900 Mazda crate engine
$499 Borla XR-1 exhaust with optional second muffler
    $430 Racing Beat header
$130 AFPR from some spec Miata shop set to 60psi at 100kpa reference. Alternatively, you can swap for a used stock NB FPR (cheap!) which is the correct 60psi. Just needs a piece of hose spliced in to reach the outlet.
    2.5" diameter intake pipe
    $150 Tuning - 1hr
$70 DIT intake. AEM dry filter of whichever size you like plus some 2.5" aluminum piping off ebay or cxracing.com
    $829 Megasquirt PnP2 ECU
    ~$5K

We know that reducing the bend adds a few hp so we want to try a 75 (15 actual) bend pipe that aims under the headlight cover. That might get us closer to 130whp. In the end though, it doesn't look
like 1.6 engines will be a viable option for SPM even E85, bolt ons and careful tuning. Still cheaper to just drop a 1.8 in.

    10001139_646559408730954_1733900659_o.jpg
We took that 4" section of pipe out of the intake to fix a little flow interruption at 5700rpm. 19-22" TB plat to filter cavity distance seems to be the window.

From now on, I think we should call Emilio "Dr. Miata!"

What was the reasoning with using a crate motor?

I didn't realize you need to set fuel pressure to 60psi for E85. I'm guessing you need to bring a lot of fuel to the track.

Would it be diminishing returns to use megasquirt and e85 with my 1.6 sm 'pro' head?

What was the reasoning with using a crate motor? Because worn out engines don't make good power. I chose his car as a guinea pig for the test to eliminate the variable of a worn engine.

I didn't realize you need to set fuel pressure to 60psi for E85. I'm guessing you need to bring a lot of fuel to the track. Stock NA6 fuel system does not flow enough for E85. Needs a bit of extra fuel pressure or bigger injectors. AFPR is cheaper.

Would it be diminishing returns to use megasquirt and e85 with my 1.6 sm 'pro' head? No

After seeing what the max possible bolt-on power is with Austin's 1.6, I have decided not to use a 1.6 in Junior. It will get an OEM rebuilt NB1 engine.

I'll let the cat out of the bag on my trick for cheap injectors...rockauto sells remanufactured Denso 420cc RX-8 injectors for ~$36 each.

No core required, $38 ea without core, $28 ea with core for the GB Remanufacturing ones. You can also find 5% off coupons online usually to add to the already ridiculous pricing. I use these for my NA6 with the NB1 swap for E85, they've been working pretty well. The only downside is the injectors do not come with a flow sheet or anything.

    Default Wrap by Aerowerkz

After rejecting the 1.6 idea for Junior, we had to start over with a fresh blueprinted NB2 engine and do a bunch of rewiring for the VVT control. That's put us behind schedule. So Phillip and the guys at Aerowerkz are hustling to get the car wrapped by early next week.
Then we finish the car, dyno, shakedown and hopefully race at Chuckwalla March 22-23. Gonna be close.

Orange main body. Black rocker panels. Wide gray metallic stripe running down the center of the car, nose to tail. Stolzfahren numbers.

Junior should also be competitive in Mod on street tires without about 160whp with the hi power map loaded. When Ryan gets his new motor in, we'll all get smoked in Super Mod.

Aerowerkz (310-817-9912) does wraps and other services. A zillion different vinyl options Vinyl Wrap Service - AeroWerkZ

    In progress

    wrap_in_progress.jpgwrap_in_progress2.jpg

Numbers by Stolzfahren.com. This is just a quick photoshop concept of the numbers, not the final product.

More pics from the wrapping process at Aerowerkz. There is some science and finesse involved.

Super has the strap. Junior has something that John made out of an old harness.

though I have the straps in 2 of my cars. I don't like them. they just hang, and get in the way. better off with the metal one.

Good to know. Maybe I'll try to design the hole in the air dam to allow access to the metal tow hooks I already have.
