    Default SoCal SuperMiata thread

Who wants to race SuperMiata in 2014?

We've been talking about this for years, how should we class the cars?

If several of the usual suspects are done with PT/PTE, can we make a class that would still fit in PTD?

    Other thoughts?

one idea we've discussed is Supermiata is not about car prep, but racecraft. and it must be cheap and fun.
our last 2 races at Chuckawalla was the most fun race I've ever had. 6 of us within 3 seconds across finish line. about 25 different passes in 1 race alone. I can't remember a single NASA race that I've raced anyone for more than 3-4 laps. they really are HPDE with a race start.

what I've proposed, open to discussion:
let's use BW13 as an example.

    1. all car / driver combo must hit a goal, say 2:07. if you can't hit 2:07, either drive better or make your car go faster, as there are already PTE cars that can do 2 minute flat.
    2. if you are faster than 2:07 during warm up, will hand out a resrictor (we will have bunch of them made, initially we can do with rpm cut also). we take your fastest time of the day as base, keep handing smaller restrictor till you are >2:07. like bracket racing, if you are under say 2:06 at the race (I pick 2:06 for 1 second margin, as there might be drafting involved), you are penalized say 1 position for every 1/4 second under 2:06.
    3. grid is inverted for the 2nd race.
    4. 1 day event, 2 races, 2 warm up (no qual, takes fastest time during warm up) . this saves cost as it is an one day event. saves lodging cost and so forth. may be Miata Challenge on Saturday, Supermiata on Sunday. BBQ (hosted by Moti) Saturday night. 1 day race event is especially for those of us with family.
    5. because it is now based on lap time, you don't need the fastest tires, or rev your engine high. you can have a car capable of going 2:00 flat on Hoosier and built engine. you can now set rpm limit at 6500rpm, and run cheap NT01 or R888. saves engine and tire. This is save a TON of money.
    6. no splitter allowed. that will save a ton of hassle.
    7. strict contact rule...
    8. every race's winner will get handed some kind of penalty to slow him/her down. goal is for the whole group to race as close as possible.

this is what I propose. I just want cheap racing fun.

In all seriousness, the mission statement is simple.

    Safe
    Cheap
    Fun

No room for big power, Hoosiers and the like. Those classes already exist. SuperMiata is the most affordable production car racing on the west coast.

how ? if you break under say 2:06, you gonna be penalized....
in the last 2 races, we equalized pretty well. everybody's fastest lap was within 1 second.

and if you win, I also proposed to add time..... your bracket time is now 2:06.25 (pulling these numbers out of my butt), while others are 2:06....

What we're considering is an introductory period of non-Miatas to increase car counts.
It would still be limited within a hp and a weight range of say 125-150whp, 2200-2400# or something like that.
Ultimately, we want close racing. That means the same platforms.

I just thought of a cool idea. 2:07 x 8laps or however many. Rank people based on whoever can closest to 2:07x8 aka 16min 56s without going under. But still have racing involved. lol.

So my 440whp 3300lb evo can't play? lol.

Just take an ad out on POF with the headline "I luv em Large" then chuck them in the car for your race and tell them it's a adventure date.
If nothing happens and there is no one around why did it not happen?

Bolt in 200 Lbs. of ballast and you're probably in the ballpark with you in the car and full gear.
Also, from looking at your avatar, it looks like you have a roll bar in the car, not a full cage - the series is for fully prepped caged race cars only.
Or just do the right thing and get a Miata...

I vote for a race at spring mountain, seeing that most of the hairdressers gang is going to be there for the Miata Challenge.

Regarding rules, I suggest having a NASA PTF/E/D crossover formula for those who are still going to race with NASA.
I saw Emilio's post at FB earlier saying that team 949 is no longer a NASA customer, so this might not be the top priority for some, but I suspect a significant percentage of the potential participants will still race with NASA.
I know I'm building my W2W car to run with NASA and I'd want to run SPM as well..
